Orin NX Specifications

The official NVIDIA Technical Blog has a good writeup: Boost Edge AI Performance with the New NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX 16GB by Jason Black. As a reminder, the NX indicates a form factor for the Jetson Orin module. This is the smallest form factor in the Jetson lineup, with a footprint approximately the size of a credit card.

Here are the major specs:

  • 1024 core NVIDIA Ampere GPU
  • 8 core Arm® Cortex®-A78AE v8.2 64-bit CPU
  • 32 Tensor Cores
  • 16GB DDR5 memory
  • Storage: Supports external NVMe
  • Hardware video encode (H.265), resolutions 1080p30 to 4K60
  • Hardware video decode (H.265), resolutions 1080p30 to 8K30
  • 3x USB 3.2
  • Power modes 10W / 15W / 25W
  • 1 Gigabit Ethernet
  • The usual assortment of Jetson GPIO (3x UART, 2x SPI, 2x I2S, 4x I2C, 1x CAN, DMIC & DSPK, PWM, GPIOs)

NVIDIA claims this to be the world’s most powerful AI computer for autonomous power-efficient machines in the smallest Jetson form factor.

Jetson Orin Performance

In comparison to the previous generation Jetson Xavier NX, the Orin NX delivers up to 5 times the performance. This is due to having twice the number of CUDA capable cores. Another factor in the speedup is the new DDR5 memory, which is a step up from the previous DDR4.

An interesting comparison is between the Orin NX 16GB and the previous big dog, the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier. The Orin NX gives about 3x the performance in NVIDIA conducted benchmarks! I caution that you’ll have to test this in the real world with your own applications. The Jetson AGX Xaviers are available with up to 64GB of main memory. If your application is highly memory dependent as opposed to compute intensive, the extra memory may play a major factor.

You’ll Need Some More Stuff

The Orin NX here is only for the Jetson module itself. You can buy the module here now:

You will also need a carrier board and a thermal solution. Remember that a thermal solution is a fancy way of saying a big ol’ heatsink or fan. NVIDIA has a cool table for looking up carrier boards and systems from their partners. You aren’t stuck with just one carrier board, different vendors have solutions with all sorts of configurations of I/O ports and camera connectors. There’s another handy table for partner supported camera modules.

To use the Orin NX, you will need to install JetPack 5.1, which is undergoing release at the time of this writing. The Orin NX is a little different than previous Jetsons in that it runs directly from a NVMe SSD. That feels like a much more civilized way to go.

With the release of the Jetson Orin NX, we now start looking forward to the Jetson Orin Nanos! Things have been busy over at NVIDIA the last few months.
